Ice Fishing Tips

If you’re an angler who starts struggling for action after a good start, you may want to start changing things up.

  • Start twisting your line, rather than just jiggling it up and down. Fish start getting accustomed to a particular pattern of motion and stop biting after a while.
  • Switch your jig style. If the fish aren’t biting at a horizontal jig anymore, switch to a vertical one, and vice versa.
  • Change the size of your jig.
  • Switch your bait around. You probably started use live bait, but if it worked initially then tailed off, switch to plastic and give that a shot.
  • Bounce the bottom of the lake. This creates noise and debris which might attract more fish.
  • Place the rod on the ice. You might think you’re very skilled at holding the rod motionless, but you can’t be as still as a stationary rod.
  • Take some chum, crush it down and throw it down the hole. This might attract a bunch of new fish.
